A crown reduction makes a tree smaller by shortening its height and the spread of its branches, while keeping its natural shape. It's often the best alternative to removing a tree that's grown too large for its space, letting more light into your garden and reducing the load on the tree.

WHAT IS A CROWN REDUCTION?

The crown is the tree's branches and leaves. In a crown reduction we cut branches back to suitable growth points so the tree stays balanced and heals well. It's different from "topping", which cuts through large branches at random heights and leaves trees weak and unsightly. We don't top trees.

How much can you take off?

It depends on the species, age and health of the tree. Most healthy trees tolerate a moderate reduction; taking off too much at once stresses the tree. We'll recommend a safe amount on the visit.

When is the best time of year?

Most trees can be reduced from late autumn to late winter, when they're dormant. We avoid heavy pruning in spring as the leaves come out. Some trees, such as birch and maple, are better pruned at other times, and we'll advise.

Do I need to be home for the quote?

As long as we have clear access to the garden, we can often provide an estimate without you being present.

Is any job too small?

No, we handle everything from minor branch pruning and hedge tidying to full-scale tree removals.

Do I need permission to cut down or prune a tree?

Sometimes. If a tree has a Tree Preservation Order (TPO) or is in a conservation area, you need your local council's consent before most work. We check this before starting and can advise you on the application.

Which areas do you cover?

We're based in the borough of Bury and cover Greater Manchester and Lancashire, including Bury, Ramsbottom, Rochdale, Bolton, Manchester, Rossendale and Darwen.

Do you take the waste away?

Yes. All branches, logs and green waste are removed and the area is cleaned up, unless you'd like to keep the logs or woodchip.
