HOW STUMP GRINDING WORKS

A stump grinder uses a spinning cutting wheel to chip away the stump and the main roots just below it. We grind down to around 6 inches below the surface. The chippings can be left to backfill the hole or taken away and replaced with topsoil.

WHY REMOVE A STUMP?

Stumps are trip hazards and get in the way of mowing
They can sprout new growth, especially from sycamore, laurel and willow
Decaying stumps can attract fungi, including honey fungus, which can spread to other plants
You get your garden space back for turf, beds, patios or extensions

Our grinder fits through a gate or passage as narrow as 28 inches, so back gardens with no side access are rarely a problem.

Do you grind stumps left by other companies?

Yes. We grind stumps whether or not we felled the tree.

Will the roots grow back?

Grinding removes the stump and main root plate. The smaller roots left in the soil usually rot away naturally. A few species can send up shoots, which we'll warn you about.

Do I need to be home for the quote?

As long as we have clear access to the garden, we can often provide an estimate without you being present.

Is any job too small?

No, we handle everything from minor branch pruning and hedge tidying to full-scale tree removals.

Do I need permission to cut down or prune a tree?

Sometimes. If a tree has a Tree Preservation Order (TPO) or is in a conservation area, you need your local council's consent before most work. We check this before starting and can advise you on the application.

Which areas do you cover?

We're based in the borough of Bury and cover Greater Manchester and Lancashire, including Bury, Ramsbottom, Rochdale, Bolton, Manchester, Rossendale and Darwen.

Do you take the waste away?

Yes. All branches, logs and green waste are removed and the area is cleaned up, unless you'd like to keep the logs or woodchip.
